JHARGRAM - Armed Maoists shot dead a school teacher in West Bengal’s Jhargram region on Monday.

It has been reported that at least 40 Maoists rounded a school building and fired at Jahar Chalak, who was sleeping on the rooftop.

The relatives of the deceased teacher said he was a member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) political outfit.

“Maoists came at around 1 a.m. last night and fired some shots. My uncle was sleeping on the roof of the school. When he stood up to see what was happening, the Maoists fired at him and killed him,” said Achinta Chalak, nephew of Jahar Chalak.

“The villagers came shouting and running towards the school building. On seeing the villagers, the Maoists escaped. My uncle was a Communist Party of India (Marxist) member,” he added.

The relatives further said the ultras had threatened Jahar Chalak several times earlier due to which he used to keep hiding in the school where he used to teach.

An investigation is underway with regard to the killing. by Riksunder (ANI)
