BANGALORE - Heavy rains in several districts in north Karnataka since Wednesday have claimed two lives, damaged around 200 houses and disrupted normal life, an official spokesperson said.
A 40-year-old man died when his house collapsed Wednesday night in Bellary district while a woman was washed away by rain waters in Raichur, the spokesperson said in Bangalore.
“There is no let up in the heavy downpour Thursday and the affected people have been provided with temporary shelter and food,” the spokesperson said.
A depression in the Bay of Bengal has resulted in the heavy rains, a met department spokesperson said.
Besides Bellary and Raichur, the other districts hit by the rains are Haveri, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad and Davangere.
The Thungabhadra reservoir, one of the largest in Karnataka, in Bellary district was near its full capacity of 1,633 ft following copious rains and 80.000 cusecs of water was released with a warning of possible flooding in several areas of neighbouring Koppal and Raichur districts.
