Pulwama residents compelled to survive on contaminated water

PAHOO - Residents of Pahoo Village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district are compelled to drink contaminated water since the water plant in their area has stopped functioning.

Today, these villagers find themselves forced by the prevailing circumstances to manage with this dirty water, as they don’t have any other alternative.

Pahoo Village has a population of 20,000, who used to get water from the filtration plant of their area, set up in 1995.

“We give money and pay for the water supply. The water here is very dirty. The water is not filtered here. Even if there is a little filtration then there is no medicine in it. The officials here say that there is no supply of medicines here. I wish to ask the government authorities why the water is not clean here?,” said Rifat Jan, a local resident.

The personnel and engineers of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) admit that such a situation does exist and it is being looked into.

“There is filtration, and the water goes into it. But it does not filter. There is some problem with the filtration that the machine parts are not working. These people know it,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a Junior Engineer.

Village women, meanwhile, rue that have no choice but to take dirty water from the stream for domestic use. By Fayaz Ahmad (ANI)
