Flood continues to wreck havoc in Karnal, Muzaffarnagar

Karnal (Haryana)/ MUZAFFARNAGAR - Waters of the swollen River Yamuna flowing through Haryana’s Karnal district and the Rivers Ganga and Sonali in Uttar Pradesh have caused extensive damage to property in the Muzaffarnagar region, rendering many families homeless.

The waters have breached the banks of the river at many places and has over flowed in Karnal district submerging scores of villages and destroying acres of crops.

Villagers expressed their disappointment with the local administration over the lack of assistance and relief.

“For past five to six days, the floods have created havoc. There is no sign of any local administrative officer. There are few volunteers who are helping us, but local officers are not letting them work,” said Raghu Ram, a resident of Karnal.

“Our village is totally submerged in water and our crops are on the verge of destruction. Almost 15 to 20 thousand people have been rendered homeless now. Our belongings and everything has been destroyed or damaged in the floods, but no one is here to listen to us,” he added.

The River Yamuna is threatening to submerge more villages in the region.

Water levels in the Rivers Ganga and Sonali have damaged sugarcane crops in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar city.
