MELBOURNE - An Australian Court has sentenced an Indian national Harjot Hundal Singh for 13 years for raping a young university student in Melbourne.

Singh (27) abducted his victim while she was walking home from Springvale railway station, in Melbourne’s south-east, on June 18 last year. He claimed that he raped the woman because of his “pent-up anger” towards his mother and wife

He was arrested at Melbourne airport a few days after the incident while trying to flee to Dubai and had a connecting ticket to India.
ingh grabbed the woman, an international university student, from behind and dragged her into the back of a work van before tying her arms together and raping her, The Age reports.

Judge Marilyn Harbison said Singh told his victim to “stop shouting otherwise I will kill you with a knife”.

Singh also squeezed the woman’s throat so hard she thought she was going to die and dumped his victim in an unknown location close to the station and drove off.

Singh, who arrived in Australia on a spousal visa in 2008, would be at risk of reoffending if not properly treated in prison, Judge Harbison said.

Crown prosecutor Ray Gibson had called for a maximum term of between 12 and 14 years and a minimum of between nine and 12 years.

He said the offending act could be described as “every woman’s nightmare”. (ANI)
