Festival of chillies give face to Manipuri women

SIRARAKHONG - The Women’s Union of Sirarakhong village in Manipur organised the first Hathei Phanit (Chilli festival) in the village, in which 120 chilli farmers displayed their wares.

“This is the first time they are having this chilli festival and I believe that definitely they will be able to popularize chilli because they have a very unique kind of chillies, this chillies are very long and very hot. It is very colourful also,” Zimmick, a local said on Tuesday.

Women of Sirarakhong believe that such exhibitions would help them in marketing the chillies within the state, and even export it in upcoming years.

“The chilli of Sirarakhong is very famous in the community. In Manipur also, even extending to Nagaland also. Sirarakhong chillies is very famous and they are using and demanding, and since the demands has come, they realised that they can market, and this way they might have organised this,” said Tychicus Vashum, project manager, Ukhrul District Community Resource Management Society (UDCRMS).
