Summary Box: Feds probe Jeep Grand Cherokee
FIERY CRASHES: Government safety regulators are investigating whether 3 million Jeep Grand Cherokees in model years between 1993 and 2004 could catch fire in rear-end or rollover crashes.
SAFETY CONCERNS: Auto safety advocates say the placement of the gas tanks in the rear of the SUV puts them at risk for spilling fuel during crashes.
CHRYSLER’S RESPONSE: Chrysler says the Grand Cherokee has an excellent safety record, but is cooperating with investigators. The probe is the first step in determining whether a recall is needed. The automaker moved the gas tank’s placement in the model after 2004.
