People evacuated as Yamuna crosses danger mark in Delhi

NEW DELHI - The volume of water in the flooded River Yamuna further increased after 2.69 lakh cusecs of water was released from Hathnikund barrage near Yamuna Nagar on Sunday.

The state administration has sent warning signals to the villages along the banks of the river.As per our information 3, 04, 674 cusecs has been recorded. The water level has increased. All the villages near the bank of Yamuna River have been alerted,” said Rajendra Singh, Junior Engineer (JE), Hathnikund Barrage.

“As per the Yamuna terminology when 2.5 lakh cusecs water is released from Hathnikund barrage it is termed as high flood level,” he added.

He further said that the authorities have taken all preventive and safety measures, advising the possible affected human habitats.

Around 500 people living close to the river bank have been evacuated and shifted to camps that have been set up in safer areas, according to officials.

Some 20 camps have been set up to provide shelter to the people affected by the rise in water level, and arrangements for medical and food facilities have also been made.

“River flow has increased. We are watching it from past on one week. Daily water level is increasing. The houses have also submerged in water. It seems the area will come in red alert slowly,” said Mohammad Ali, a local.

According to the meteorological department, the city has so far received 31.7 mm of rainfall from Friday till Saturday.

The national capital has recorded a total 617 mm of rainfall this monsoon season. (ANI)
