Narayan Surve Passes Away

THANE, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Highly acclaimed Marathi poet Narayan Surve breathed his last on Monday in Thane after a brief illness. The renowned poet who was honored with a Padma Shri for his illustrious body of work, was 83 at the time of his demise. The news of his death which has been confirmed by family sources, has come as a rude shock to all his followers across the country especially in his native state of Maharashtra.
Since the news of Narayan Surve’s unfortunate demise has spread, condolences have been pouring in from various quarters. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was one of the first to express his grief as the death of the celebrated poet who said that with Narayan Surve’s death, a legendary thinker and poet has been lost who is known to have represented the common man through his work. However, the Maharashtra Chief Minister was not the only politician to express his grief at the news of the noted poet’s death as Deputy CM Chaggan Bhujbal remembered Narayan Surve as the poet who had became the voice of the depressed section of the society with his poetry. Apart from these, a host of other prominent personalities expressed their sadness at the demise of the award-winning poet who was successful in touching many hearts with his splendid poetry.
Narayan Surve was a self-made man who had encountered many hardships in life after he was orphaned following his birth. The poet had spent his early years on the streets of Mumbai while he earned a living for himself. He learnt to read and write and gradually became one of the most significant Marathi writers.
