Udaipur hosts historic womens’ only fair

UDAIPUR - Hundreds of women recently participated in a two-day long fair exclusively meant for women of Udaipur to celebrate bonds of friendship.
The fair had various items of interest such as artificial jewellery stalls, bangles, clothes, accessories, sweets and other mouth-watering snacks.
Explaining the importance of the fair, a woman said it has been famous since ancient time.
“The custom and traditional value of our Mewar is famous across the world from ancient times. The festival is known as Hariyali Amavas. It’s a two-day long fair covering whole day. Thousands of women participate in it. For one-day men can also visit in this fair along with their better half and enjoy the festival. The fair ground is known as ‘Saheliyon ki Baadi’. In this fair, everyone enjoys the authentic sweets and other fairs specialties,” said Gayatri Rathor, a resident of Udaipur.
The festival also includes folk and other artistic events.
A police team was assigned to ensure security for the women.
“You can see the crowd of women enthusiastically participating in it. Men’s entry is restricted for today. We have done essential arrangements, police officials are on their toes to look after the security of women flock. We are strictly looking after the traffic of the area. Heavy vehicles are restricted in this area, even two wheeler vehicles are not allowed,” said Tejraj Singh, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Udaipur.
“Around 200 police officials are doing their duty here, among which 80 are women constables. We are strictly taking care of the event so that there would not be any mishap occur,” he added.
