JAMSHEDPUR - The Tata Zoo in Jamshedpur has begun sterilization of male spotted deer to check the rise in their numbers.oo authorities have sterilized at least 15 spotted deer and plan to vasectomise ten more.

The zoo now has 60 deer of which 25 are adult males.

“When zoo authority (Central Zoo Authority) evaluated us they told us that the population of spotted deer in the zoo and other herbivores has increased and this has to be brought under control. We have finalized a protocol. We have identified 25 male spotted deer for sterilization,” said Bipul Chakraboraty, the director of the zoo.

Veterinarians tranquilize the animals before performing the vasectomy on them.

Central Zoo Authority rules permit sterilization to remove a portion of the spermatic cord that connects the testes through a simple process. By Anup Sinha (ANI)
