Restrictions reimposed in parts of Kashmir Valley

SRINAGAR - Restrictions on the movement of people has been reimposed with a huge deployment of security forces as fresh protests were reported from various parts of Srinagar.

Restrictions have also been imposed in the southern Kashmir towns of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kakpora and Kulgam while there are no restrictions in Shopian.

On Sunday, the authorities lifted curfew from the entire Valley after eight days and some semblance of normalcy was seen in Srinagar and other towns.

Curfew was relaxed on Saturday in eight police station areas in Srinagar and Gandarbal, Badgam and Handwara towns.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Farooq Ahmad, said they have lifted the curfew in areas under the following police stations - Rajbagh, Kothibagh, Harwan, Nishat, Panthchowk, Shergari, Mushibagh and Karan Nagar.

Earlier, hardliner separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has asked people to resume normal life for a day Sunday in order to buy essential supplies.

Geelani has also made an appeal for peace in the Kashmir Valley asking people not to resort to violence by burning public property.

“I appealed to the people not to burn police stations, rail tracks and public property. Violence will damage our fight and movement. It won’t affect the people we are fighting against. It will affect us,” he said.

“The struggle has to be peaceful in all its forms. We should not provide the Government any opportunity to brand our movement is a wrong way,” he added.

Kashmir Valley has been on the boil for over 50 days due to violent protests against civilians being killed in firing by security forces. (ANI)
