Kashmir a unique problem and needs unique solution, says Chidambaram

NEW DELHI - Noting that Jammu and Kashmir had acceded to India in “unique circumstances”, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday said the State has a “unique problem” and requires a “unique solution”.

Responding to the clarifications on his statement in both the houses of Parliament on the situation in the Valley, Chidambaram said that the Home Ministry is working to evolve a strategy to deliver its promise on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSA) and reduction of security personnel in the state.

He said Center would resume political process to win the hearts and minds of the people of Kashmir

“We will resume the political process. The answer to the problem lies only through the political process, only through dialogue,” he added.

Chidambaram said that the Prime Minister is likely to meet leaders of all parties from Jammu and Kashmir.

Chidambaram appealed to all sections to put an end to the cycle of violence. I would appeal to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to put an end to the current cycle of violence,” he said.

I have a special appeal to parents: your children’s safety and welfare is our paramount consideration - as it must be yours - and I would urge you to ensure that they do not join the violent protests,” he added.

Chidambaram further said the Central Government deeply regrets the loss of lives in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I convey our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased. A number of people have also been injured and the State Government has assured that they will be given the best medical treatment,” said Chidambaram. (ANI)
