TALLAHASSEE (GaeaTimes.com)- Despite earlier claims that the body scan images cannot be saved, some police agencies have admitted that they are saving tens of thousands of images. Though the TSA (Transportation and Security Administration) has claimed that the images cannot be stored or saved, the US Marshals Service admitted that they have saved thousands of images from a security checkpoint in a Florida courthouse.

There has been significant controversy regarding the body scan images in America in the recent months as the EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center) has filed a lawsuit that stops the use of the device. According to the executive director of EPIC, the devices are built in a way that allows the images to be stored and recorded and that is what the Marshals Service is doing. The resolution and detail of the images depend on the technology used in the scanner and some can provide images that provide quite a graphic images of the anatomy. Recently, children were stopped from passing through the full body scanners in the UK as there were fears of child pornography.

The TSA had insisted in a blog that it will not save, transmit or keep the body scan images. It had said that the officer who views the images will not be able to see the people who are being scanned as an additional security and privacy measure. They said that the officers are provided with a two-way radio to communicate if there is any security threat. Privacy advocates on the other hand insist that the scanners are equivalent to virtual strip searching.
