KOCHI - The fishing competition held at the fish farms of Kerala’s back waters in Kochi city here on Monday for the first time has proved to be a major draw.

Organized to promote fish angling in Poothotta area of Kochi city, the fishing contest captivated hundreds of people as participants in the event.

Participants were given baits and locally-made rods to catch the fish and claim the prize.

According to the organizers the fishing contest, the public response was encouraging and a matter of delight for them.

Speaking about the concept behind the competition’s organisation, Kamal Krishan, one of the officials, said

“We were looking at doing something which is different, which nobody has done, and very specific to Kerala. So we did what we all have done in our childhood. We have all done this kind of fishing around in places which is very close to homes. Probably that is all missing in the present time. It was also something which we can bring back to the people, to have a day out fishing, enjoy, have a good time, so that’s where the concept came from.”

Around 300 participants from all walks of life tried their hands on fish angling in the two hour-long competition.

Participants at the event appreciated the organizers’ attempt to promote fish angling in Kerala that is famous for its backwaters.

“There is a good promotion. Like I saw the aqua-tourism; that’s all like a really good idea and it’s a good way to get people more interested into a little bit of their own country. Like, it’s a good idea,” said Nupur Kapse, a participant from Bangalore city.

Organizers, who are thrilled at a big public response, said that they would consider turning the event into an annual competition. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)
