CHATHAM, ENGLAND (GaeaTimes.com)- As shark and marine experts tagged a great white shark in the beaches of Chatham, more and more people, many tourists among them turned spectators to take a look at the giant creature. According to reports from the Division of Marine Fisheries in Chatham, as many as eight sharks were spotted in the waters, while the mariners could tag only one of them.
The great white shark that was tagged in the Chatham waters last Tuesday is reportedly 12 feet in size and was located in the Monomoy Island. Greg Skomal, a marine biologist speaking on behalf of his team said in statement to the media that he was very excited about what the team has laid their hands upon and it has been one of the most successful expeditions for the crew which made it to the waters of the Monomoy Island.
It is the summer holiday season and for the past few years Chatham has witnessed several white sharks visiting the waters of the various islands in and around the city. This year too the tourists who frequent Chatham in the summers were given prior warnings of visiting great white sharks in the region. In fact media reports claim that shark spotting has become even more popular than swimming in the region. All tourists this year were requested to remain as close to the shore of the beaches as possible, because the white sharks usually remain in the parts of the water which are also frequented by seals. The great white shark that was tagged a few days ago was attacked on the tail by a harpoon by the captain of the boat.
