Free textbooks scheme improves enrolment poor students in Chhattisgarh

MAHASAMUND - Thousands of school students of impoverished families of Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund city have benefited by the government-sponsored free textbooks programme.

Under ‘Free Textbooks Distribution’ programme introduced by the government, schools have achieved success in enrolments after the implementation of this scheme.

“The scheme introduced by the government is very good and helpful because we know that in India the ratio of poor families is huge, and there are people who cannot afford textbooks for their children, and such government schemes in which they are providing free textbooks to the students is very helpful and now with this, people of poor families will now send their children to school for studies,” said Arun Kumar Vansabh, a resident.

Many poor families are now enrolling their children in the school as the state is offering study materials free of charge.

Over 165,000 textbooks have already been distributed to students up till the 8th standard, whereas nearly 15,000 textbooks have been distributed amongst secondary school students.

“The books which we have been provided are not easily available in the market because of which our studies suffer a lot, and these textbooks have been provided to us for free due to which students of poor families, who cannot afford to buy textbooks are now coming to school,” said Supriya Chadrekar, a student.

Mahasamund district has 2,118 government schools where free textbooks are being provided to the student of classes first to tenth.

“Main objective is to encourage the children to study and due to some reason like financial reasons, etc., some children don’t come to school. So the government’s main aim is to help the children so that they don’t stop studying,” said T. K. Sahu, the District Education Officer. By Chandrakant Pargir (ANI)
