KUALA LUMPUR - Two Muslim men involved in the infamous cow head protest over the relocation of a Hindu temple in 2009, were fined RM 3,000 each for defaulting on a three months’ jail term. A Sessions Court passed the order after they pleaded guilty to a sedition charge in a court in Selangor state.

“In a multiracial country, we need to take care of the sensitivity of others. Religious issues must be handled in a practical and holistic manner,” The Star quoted Judge Hasbi Hasan, as saying.

The judge also advised the two convicts, 32 year-old Eyzva Ezhar Ramly and 36-year old Mohammed Azmir Mohammed Zaim, who respectively carried and stomped on a cow head in the protest, to learn from the episode and to think before they act.

Mohammed Azmir, who stepped on the animal’s head was fined 3,000 ringgit (940 dollars) by the court while Ramly, who carried the cow head, was sentenced to one week’s jail besides a 3,000 ringgit fine.

The court ordered Ramly’s jail time to run after he completes his current jail term on August 4 for a drug conviction.

The court decided to discharge 12 participants of the cow-head protest including Mohd Azmir and Ezhar Ramly after fining them RM1,000 individually or a month of jail time in default.

“The culprits have pleaded guilty, hence there is no reason for the prosecution to pursue the case,” Defence counsel Afifuddin Hafifi said. (ANI)
