Wipro Revamps Grading System

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Aziz Premji led Wipro which is the third-largest information technology (IT) company of India has adopted a unique grade to make sure that its workers belonging to the mid level and entry level positions grow within the organization faster. They would be given faster promotions and pay hikes under the new scheme. The attrition rate is higher in these two segments. In the last quarter the company recorded an attrition rate of 17 percent. The result of the latest quarter will be out soon but the company does not want to take chance any further.
Wipro rates its employees into 5 grades - A to E. This of course depends on an employee’s seniority and experience. The new joiners are categorized under group A. The top level executives get an E grade rating. Once an employee completes a year he gets shied to B1 band. The team leaders generally belong to B2 grade. Now the Bangalore based company has made another grade named B3. Around 70 percent of Wipro workers belong to the B spectrum. Wipro human resources head and senior vice-president Sourav Govil has said that a number of employees have already been promoted to the new grade.
In the previous 2 quarters top Indian IT entities including Infosys, HCL, TCS and Wipro have seen higher rates of attrition. To check the trend they are resorting to several measures. Wipro is contemplating offering additional incentives and promotion scopes. The IT sector has always been plagued by attrition but now the companies are trying to ensure they do not lose trained manpower any more.
