Govt. rubbishes BJP’s charge of CBI’s misuse in Sohrabuddin case

NEW DELHI - The Central Government on Friday rejected Bharatiya Janata Party’s accusation that the Central Bureau of Investigation was being misused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which Gujarat Minister Amit Shah has been summoned by the investigating agency.

Clarifying against BJP’s charge, Minister of State for Personnel, Prithviraj Chavan here today informed that CBI followed court’s orders.

“These charges have been levelled on a number of occasions. In these politically sensitive cases, CBI has gone into investigation following court orders and it is being supervised by the Central Vigilance Commission,” Chavan said. havan questioned in such a situation, how can anyone say that it was working on the directions of the Central government.

“Everyone in the country wants that criminals should be apprehended and punished. Let the CBI do its job. Nobody should impute motives. We should welcome free and fair investigation,” he said.

In November 2005, Sohrabuddin was shot dead on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. His wife, Kauser Bi, was also killed. At the time, Gujarat’s Anti Terror Squad (ATS) said that Sohrabuddin was a terrorist who planned to assassinate Modi.

In 2007, the Gujarat state government admitted in court that Sohrabuddin and Kauser Bi had been wrongly killed. Some of the state’s senior-most policemen are in jail, charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and kidnapping.

Phone records allegedly show that those same policemen were in close and constant touch with Shah once they picked up Sohrabuddin and his wife, Kauserbi, from a bus headed from Hyderabad to Sangli. (ANI)
