TEMPE (GaeaTimes.com)- In a recent development an artificially created lake is going to lose a large amount of water it contained after a dam broke down and as a result sent several thousand gallons of water downstream. The incident took place on Saturday night near the A’s campus. The rubberized dam on Tempe Town Lake was approximately 16 feet tall. The collapse of the dam did not result in any injury as such. The students of the university were shocked to the sound of the dam breaking down. The also said that they could feel the ground beneath their feet was shaking.
The witnesses said that the breakdown of the Tempe Town Lake filled the dry Salt River with water very fast and the small animals on the riverbed started running for their lives. The authorities sprung into action swiftly and warning sirens started wailing soon. The officers ran along the riverbed to warn others. The water was flowing at the rate of 15,000 cubic feet a second as it was found. Hugh Hallman, the Tempe Mayor expressed his concerns over the matter. It is not certain why and how the dam collapsed.
The Tempe Town Lake has two pairs of inflatable dams on its sides and the lifespan of these dams are over 25 years. However, the harsh sun as well as the climate of Arizona was taking a toll on the dams. After this incident the lake will lose the 2/3rd or 3/4th water it had. In some places water length may drop to 3 feet as it has been reported.
