The Last Supper Unveiled In Kolkata

KOLKATA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Johann Zofanny’s “The Last Supper” which is considered to be one of the most prized possessions of the artist was restored back to Kolkata. Reportedly, “The Last Supper” is currently unveiled and is on display for the general public in St. John’s Church.
“The Last Supper” measures 10×12 ft and is regarded to be one of the finest oil paintings of the neoclassical German painter. Johann Zofanny, a Frankfurt native was better known as the royal portrait painter. The artist of “The Last Supper” had visited Kolkata way back in the year of 1783. Owing to his position of a respected member of the Royal Academy of London, he was granted commission in the year of 1787 for “The Last Supper.” It was also one of the first paintings that St. John’s Church had received. The founder Warren Hastings was the founder of the church and a great patron of the painter.
The restoration work was done by a total of five Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage Conservators. The great German restorer Renate Kant supervised the entire process of restoration. When asked about the restoration of “The Last Supper” Renate Kant told the media that it was extremely difficult for the conservators and the entire process took a total of five months. The conservators started working on “The Last Supper” in the month of February and finally completed the task in the current month. Speaking on the same note was artist Ramananda Bandopadhyay who praised Renate Kant for the fine job that he and his team has done. The artist said that “The Last Supper” is one such project which demanded the involvement of an expert who has the love for art and Renate Kant was the right choice.
