Wheat rots in Haryana

CHANDIGARH - Tonnes of wheat lying in government storehouses are have rotting due to poor storage and negligence by officials in Karnal, Haryana.

In the Haryana State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Ltd (HAFED) storehouse, heaps of bags containing wheat grain have been spoiled by rainwater. Some bags were stacked out in the open without cover.torehouse, employees said that the shed protecting the heaps was blown away by the rains.

“These grains had come from the Jundla storehouse. Due to rainwater, the already weak pillars of the shed fell, leading the stacks of wheat to get wet and rot,” said Kamal, a storehouse employee.

Officials, refused to comment about the cause behind the rotting of the wheat.

“We will be able to establish anything only after we launch an inquiry into it,” said Ravinder Malik, District Food Inspector, HAFED.

Media reports have alleged that the rotten grain was repackaged and sent back to local grain markets.

Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar, said that immediate action would be taken against responsible officials for any negligence on their part. (ANI)
