Summary Box: Upbeat earnings boost interest rates
EARNINGS BOOST: A strong start to second-quarter earnings season weakened demand for safe-haven assets, sending interest rates higher and Treasury prices lower.
BULLISH OUTLOOK: Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc., railroad operator CSX Corp. and chip maker Intel Corp. all issued upbeat forecasts. That’s raising hopes that the recovery main be gaining momentum.
BUSY AUCTION: The government auctioned $32 billion in one-month bills. Demand for the notes exceeded that seen during a similar auction earlier this month.
