CANBERRA - The State Government-owned North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation has announced that India’s Adani Group had been given the rights to assess the viability of new coal export infrastructure at Dudgeon Point near Mackay.

According to The Courier Mail, while the big coal companies are yet to push the button on the next big industry expansion in Queensland, the bevy of players lining up to hopefully facilitate the export of millions of extra tonnes of coal is growing by the day.

India, expected to be the next big growth market for Australian coal, has joined the queue.

Prime Infrastructure’s Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Management is the other “preferred proponent” for development of the coal terminal which lies within the Port of Hay Point.

The area is close to DBCT’s existing terminal and adjacent to the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance-owned Hay Point export facility.

“North Queensland Bulk Ports has held this land for development since 2000. Its close proximity to the two (existing) coal terminals will support the increasing demand for coal from new and existing industry,” NQBP chief executive Brad Fish said.

The DBCT was recently expanded to 85 million tonnes a year and BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance is currently examining increasing the capacity of its dedicated Hay Point terminal from 44 million tonnes a year to about 55 million tonnes. (ANI)
