Stocks close mixed ahead of upbeat Alcoa report
WAITING GAME: Investors made few moves while they waited for Alcoa Inc. to start second-quarter earnings season. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18 points. More stocks fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
BIG WINNERS: Alcoa rose in after-hours trading after issuing upbeat results. SanDisk Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. rose on analysts’ optimistic comments. And Hewitt Associates got a big lift from news it’s being bought by Aon Corp.
UP NEXT: Investors will be looking ahead to big bank earnings and General Electric Co.’s report at the end of the week.
