Rehabilitation programme for women prisoners at Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail

AHMEDABAD - A rehabilitation programme has been initiated at Sabarmati Jail for women prisoners.

The effort by jail authorities and the State government has been supported by many non-government organizations.

A female instructor has been assigned the task of teaching them sewing, knitting and making incense sticks.

“When we were in jail, we were facing a lot of trouble. Our mental status was not sound. Later this sewing work has been introduced to us, which is really beneficial for us. After learning this sewing work, we would be able to start our own work and can further teach others,” said Mumtaz Bano, prisoner.

“The creative work initiated in jail is really good. It’s a saying that ‘an empty mind is a devil’s workshop’ so if the prisoners are engaged in some fruitful activities like this then thoughts of wrongdoings or crime will not enter in their minds. So it’s a great effort,” added Jignya Ben, another prisoner.

According to the superintendent of Sabarmati jail, the endeavor will bring in a positive change among the prisoners.

“When these people will go out after completing their sentence, then the mentality of these people will be totally transformed. If it’s a criminal mentality, it will be change.

They won’t commit any crime again. This is what we are expecting from them. We are getting positive results of this initiative,” said R.J Parghi, Superintendent, Sabarmati Jail.(ANI)
