KUALA LUMPUR - A Chinese sinseh has revealed that a number of new mothers in Malaysia are taking soup made from placenta in the belief that it will help them maintain their youthfulness and looks.

According to the Harian Metro, the sinseh, known only as Sam, said he has been getting orders for placenta, mostly from the Malaysian community, and that women believe the soup would boost their energy level and promote post-natal recovery.

“Besides drinking the soup for health reasons, some also leave the placenta to dry and use it in other food,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

“They believe that this could balance their hormone levels and help them bond with their child,” Sam, who operates in Johor Baru, said.

He said these women had assumed that consumption of the soup could bring them health benefits.

“But they have to think of a possible risk of bacterial infection,” he added.

State Women, Family, Community and Health Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said consuming placenta was an unusual practice.

She said, however, she had not received any complaints about it. (ANI)
