Hurriyat activist arrested for instigating violence in Kashmir

SRINAGAR - Shabir Ahmed Wani, district President of Hurriyat conference, accused of trying to instigate more violence in Kashmir Valley, was arrested on Friday.

Police arrested Wani from Narbal-Magam road after intercepting his conversation with another hardline Hurriyat activist, Ghulam Ahmed Dar.

Wani was booked under various provisions of the Ranbir Penal Code and may be charged under the Public Safety Act, under which he can be detained for two years.

The activists of the group led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani were allegedly conspiring to spark off further violence in Kashmir Valley and get at least 10 to 15 people killed in a procession.

In the conversation intercepted by the police, Wani and Dar were allegedly discussing ways to brew trouble during a procession set to be taken out in Budgam district of central Kashmir.

They were referring to large procession of 20, 000 people that had started in Budgam district. The two leaders discussed how the procession could be manipulated to create casualties.

The situation in the valley has been tense over the past few weeks due to repeated clashes between protestors and security forces. (ANI)
