AMBALA - As incessant rains caused floods in different parts of Haryana, residents are faced with heavy water logging and fear of diseases as water recedes, leaving behind heaps of garbage and debris in residential areas.
People in Ambala city, on Thursday, were struggling with floodwaters that entered residential areas after a canal in the outskirts of the city developed cracks.
Oil drums and other materials floated in knee-deep waters at a storage facility of the State electricity board.
Residents have arranged water pumps to pump out water from their houses. People complained of negligence on the part of the local administration and lamented not receiving any assistance.
“There is no assistance being provided to us from the administration. No one has provided us with water or food. We are just managing on our own. We are just doing everything on our own,” said Satish Kumar, an employee of the Electricity Board in Ambala.
Meanwhile, train services from and to the city remained disrupted.
Many passengers were left stranded as trains were either running very late or cancelled.
“We still have no clue of the train which was supposed to go from here at 11 p.m. yesterday night. We have to go to a wedding; even the groom is with us. He was to be married tonight, but now I think he would only be able to get married tomorrow. What else can we do? We had already booked our tickets in advance,” said Manish Sharma, a passenger.
Though the railway administration informed the media that they are trying to resume normal services, and have made alternative arrangements for the passenger trains.
“Yesterday we had restored the maximum traffic. But at some section between Mauri and Shahabad there are few breaches on the track, because of which we had to close that section today. Trains are being diverted to an alternative route through Sahranpur,” said Manoj Rana, Public Relations Officer, Railways.
Hundreds of villages in the northern states of Haryana and Punjab were inundated, due to continuous heavy downpour over the last few days.
On Wednesday (July 7), water has accumulated on the national highway linking Kurukshetra to Ambala, and then onto Chandigarh.
Many vehicles were stranded due to the flooding of the roads. (ANI)
