MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Cidco and the State environment ministry are trying their level best to persuade the Union ministry of environment and forests about the viability of the proposed new airport in Navi Mumbai. Cidco will exp0lain its plans to divert and widen the rivers Gadhi and Ulve. It also plans to plant mangroves on around 400 hectares of land in Palghar and Dahanu. It will compensate for the tree that will be cut on 162 hectres in Panvel. Cidco will meet with the state environment department to talk about the different environmental factors included in the project. The final report will be sent to the Union environment ministry thereafter.

Valsa Nair Singh the State environment secretary said that the Union ministry of environment and forests is worried about the possibility of flooding in case the rivers are widened. It is also anxious about the ecology getting affected adversely. The objections raised by the ministry have put the plan for airport on hold. The direction given by the Union ministry of environment and forests has prompted Cidco to revise and amend its plans and it has come up with a revised proposal. It has made a number of changes and additions to the original plan.

The report of Cidco will be given to the ministry by month end and a panel of experts will decide whether the new plans are viable or not. The new airport may lessen the air traffic on the existing airport in Mumbai. However the ministry is concerned about its impacts on the environment in the long run.
