US solider linked to Iraq attack video charged
BAGHDAD — The U.S. Army has charged an American solider suspected of leaking a military video of an attack in Iraq with multiple counts of mishandling and leaking classified data and putting national security at risk.
Army Spc. Bradley Manning is suspected of leaking a video that shows Apache helicopters gunning down unarmed men in Iraq. Among those believed to have been killed in the attack were a Reuters photographer and his driver.
The video was an unflattering portrait of the Iraq war. It was posted on the website Wikileaks.org last April.
Manning was detained in Baghdad in early June and is now being held in Kuwait.
The Army said in a statement on Tuesday that a military version of a grand jury hearing will determine if Manning should face a trial by court-martial.
