Tributes to martyrs mark Farmers Day in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE - Farmers in Tamil Nadu gathered in huge numbers at Coimbatore to observe the Farmers Day on Monday.
Over one thousand farmers, holding banners, took part in the rally organised by the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association. They paid tributes to the farmers who lost their lives during the crusade for better farming facilities and land reforms between 1971 and 1980.
They said that despite sacrifices made by those martyrs, the situation is still the same or rather worse than in the past.
“The present condition of farmers is actually pathetic, they are in deep crisis; they are unable to do cultivation,” said Shivaswami, President of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association.
He also mentioned that both the central and the state governments have neglected the farmers.
“Successive governments have neglected them (farmers) and because of that they are almost leaving the farming work and going for another occupation,” observed Shivaswami.
He also said that unless the demands like proper manure and proper mechanism to tackle the shortage of labour in agriculture sector is addressed by the government, the problem of food scarcity would never be solved. (ANI)
