Dow ends losing streak as traders buy selectively
ZIGZAG MARKET: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 172 points in the morning, fell into the red by afternoon, then managed a 57-point gain to stop a seven-day slide.
STOCKS LOOK CHEAP: There was no big event that made investors buy. Stocks are, however, looking much more appealing after weeks of losses. The Dow fell 7.3 percent in just the last two weeks.
WINNERS AND LOSERS: Oil services companies rose on an upbeat analyst report. Retailers fell on pessimistic comments from analysts. Investors didn’t want to take chances with monthly sales figures due out Thursday.
