KUALA LUMPUR - Perak Malaysian Indian Congress chief K. Kumaran has asked Indian religious and welfare organisations to come together to find ways to increase the Indian population in Malaysia.
Speaking to reporters after attending the annual celebrations of the Sri Maha Kaliamman Om Sakthi temple in Buntong Dua, Ipoh, he said fewer people would be attending temple functions in the future if the current situation persisted.
Tamil Nesan quoted Kumaran as saying that the Government would only consider the community’s requests favourably if there were an increase in their population.
He said previously, the Government set aside a 10 percent allocation for the Indian community but due to the decrease in its population, but had now been reduced to eight percent.
Meanwhile, National Union of Teaching Profesion (NUTP) vice-president M. Arunagirinathan had called on the Malaysian Education Department to give temporary Tamil school teachers more opportunities to pursue teacher training courses during the school holidays.
He said the department should give priority to the temporary Tamil teachers, who had served the schools with dedication for many years. (ANI)
