Mystery explosion guts Indian restaurant in Sydney

SYDNEY - Four people escaped death after an Indian restaurant in Sydney exploded, showering the road with debris and severely damaging the property.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, police are of the opinion that the blaze at the restaurant in Cleveland Street, Surry Hills, was deliberately lit and are hunting two men seen running from the scene, as it broke out at about 11.30pm (AEST).
“Two people were seen running from the restaurant just after 11.30pm as fire engulfed the building,” police said.
“Four occupants of a unit above the restaurant escaped. One person was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with smoke inhalation, while another was treated by paramedics,” the paper quoted an eyewitness, as saying.
A NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said more than 20 firefighters fought the blaze and had it under control after about 30 minutes.
“The blaze was suspicious but we could not speculate yet on what caused the explosion,” the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the two men running from the blaze.
Detectives are expected to speak to the four people who escaped the fire today. (ANI)
