NEW DELHI - As a goodwill gesture ahead of his visit to Islamabad, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday ordered release of four Pakistani prisoners.
They are currently lodged in various jails of Gujarat.
“The Home Minster has approved the release of four Pakistani prisoners as a gesture of goodwill,” a Home Ministry statement said.
“These prisoners will be repatriated from the Attari border on June 30 and handed over to Pakistan Rangers,” the statement added.
Chidambaram’s two-day visit beginning today is the first ministerial visit since the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
He will discuss greater regional interaction on combating terrorism with his counterparts from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.
He will also meet his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik on the sidelines of the SAARC meet.
The talks are expected to be centred on terrorism emanating from Pakistan and the steps India would like Pakistan to take to end it.
Chidambaram is also expected to press Pakistan to pursue the probe against LeT founder Hafiz Saeed by following up on the leads provided in the Indian dossiers. (ANI)
