Beijing June 23 (ANI): China has said that it is carrying out a serious investigation into the sinking of a Republic of Korea (ROK) warship.

“The sinking of Navy frigate ‘Cheonan’ is a complicated incident, and China doesn’t have the first-hand information. China will objectively and fairly deal with the incident in accordance with the facts,” Xinhua quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang as saying.

The 1,200-ton Navy frigate “Cheonan,” sank on March 26 killing forty-six sailors out of 104 crewmembers onboard in South Korean island of Baekryeong due to an unexplained explosion.

South Korea’s parliamentary defense committee unanimously condemned Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for sinking a South Korean navy warship. However, Pyongyang has denied its involvement in the incident.

“The statements by the ROK and the DPRK on that occasion will help the member countries of the Security Council to learn the situation,” Qin added.

He assured that China would continue to strive for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. (ANI)
