Srinagar violence claims another life

SRINAGAR - One person was killed and five people were injured here Sunday when security forces fired at a mob protesting against the death of another youth in an earlier clash, police said.
Protesters attacked the Noorbagh police post after attending the funeral of Muhammad Rafiq Bangroo, a 26-year-old who succumbed Saturday to injuries he had suffered a week earlier in clashes with security forces.
Bangroo was allegedly beaten by security forces June 12 during protests in the city’s Safa Kadal area. He battled for life for a week.
A police officer Sunday justified the latest firing on the mob.
“The security men fired in self-defence. Six people were injured in the incident,” a police officer said. One of them, identified as Javaid Ahmad, died in the S.M.H.S. hospital here.
As news of the death spread and street protests erupted, Srinagar became tense. Authorities deployed more police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in the Old City areas.
