SRINAGAR - One person was killed and five were injured here Sunday as security forces fired at a mob that attacked a police post after a youth, injured in clashes last week, succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Angry protesters attacked the Noorbagh police post in Srinagar after attending the funeral of Muhammad Rafiq Bangroo, the 26-year-old who died in hospital late Saturday.

“The deployed security men fired in self-defence. Six people were injured in the incident,” a police officer said.

One of the injured, identified as Javaid Ahmad, succumbed to injuries in the city’s S.M.H.S. hospital.

The city was tense following the violence and authorities have moved in heavy deployments of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to clamp curfew in the old city areas.

Bangroo, who died late Saturday, was allegedly beaten by security forces during clashes in the city’s Safa Kadal area June 12.

He was battling for life for the last one week in the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where he succumbed despite best efforts by doctors.
