SRINAGAR - A youth, allegedly beaten by the security forces during clashes in Srinagar June 12, died in the hospital late Saturday.

Muhammad Rafiq Bangroo, 26, was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Medical Institute Soura (SKIMS) last Saturday after allegedly being beaten by the security forces in Safa Kadal area of the city as protesters clashed with police after the death of class 12 student, Tufail Ahmad Mattoo.

Doctors had described Bangroo’s condition as critical even though he had been put on life support system in the hospital.

“Despite our best efforts, the youth died late this evening,” an attending doctor said here.

Mattoo, 17, had died after being hit by a tear smoke shell on his head during the stone pelting clashes in old city Rajouri Kadal area June 11.

Massive protests had broken out in the city last week in the wake of Mattoo’s death and the authorities clamped curfew like restrictions in the old city areas for three days to maintain law and order.
