CHENNAI / COIMBATORE - Hundreds of students in Chennai designed a gigantic rangoli, a brightly-coloured sandpainting, for the forthcoming World Tamil Classical Conference, to be held in Coimbatore.
The rangoli, which depicted the logo of the conference and showcased the famous Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, measured at 3,600 square feet, and was created by schoolchildren in order to promote the classical Tamil language.
A host of Tamil dignitaries attended the event, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi inaugurated the rangoli.
“It is an honour to be here, it is great to see an English medium institution taken the time off…taken the day…dedicated to the Tamil culture and it is good to instill the factor of the Tamil mother tongue into our students,” said Santosh Kumar, a Mt Everest climber who attended the event.
A similar and smaller rangoli, measuring 50 feet in length and width, was designed in the state’s Coimbatore city as well, where the conference is scheduled from June 23 to 27.
“The main logo and theme of this Tamil conference is the great poet Thiruvalluvar. We have made a giant rangoli with lots of sea salt and colourful items. This rangoli is dedicated to the great Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar and the great language Tamil,” said Deepshika, a student and sandpainting designer.
Over 300 students had designed the rangolis by using large quantities of salt, sand, and coloured powders.(ANI)
