JOHANNESBURG - A 61-year-old South African man was beaten to death by his wife and two kids for insisting on watching a World Cup match between Germany and Australia, when the latter wanted to watch a religious show.
Cops said David Makoeya, was battling with his family for the remote control so he could watch Sunday’s Germany-Australia game.
According to the New York Daily News, his family was adamant about watching a gospel program and refused to change the channel.
“He said, ‘No, I want to watch soccer,’” police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said. “That is when the argument came about.”
An incensed Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand, but he didn’t make it far, police say.
The soccer fan’s 68-year-old wife Francina, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang pounced on him.
“It appears they banged his head against the wall,” Malefo said. “They phoned the police only after he was badly injured … by the time the police arrived the man was already dead.”
Makoeya’s wife and kids, who live in the tiny village of Makweya, were arrested Sunday night.
His daughter was released on 200 dollar bail, but the other two are still in custody.
Relatives said they were stunned by the violence. (ANI)
