Iran says nuclear fuel swap still possible
TEHRAN — Iran state television has quoted the president as saying a nuclear fuel swap proposed by Turkey and Brazil as a solution to the standoff with the West is still possible.
The report Tuesday said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told visiting Turkish parliament speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin that the agreement is “alive and will play a role” in future talks.
Under the deal Iran would send much of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in return for the higher enriched uranium it need for a research reactor.
The deal does not, however, mandate the halt to uranium enrichment sought by the West.
The U.N. Security Council on June 9 passed a fourth set of sanctions to curtail Iran’s nuclear program over fears it is to develop weapons. Iran denies the charge.
