A newborn in Gujarat weighs over 12 pounds!

SURAT - A baby girl born to a couple in Surat city of Gujarat this past week has turned cynosure of all eyes, for weighing more than double the weight of any normal baby.
Born to the Ketan Mehta family on Friday (June 11), the newborn weighs 5.7 kilograms (12.57 pounds). Normally, newborn babies weigh between 2.5-3.5 kilograms.
Despite its weight, the newborn is a healthy child.
“Normally when a child is born, as per the Indian standards, a child’s birth weight remains somewhere around 2.5 kilograms to 3.5 kilograms. In western countries it is more. But this baby, who was born yesterday, weighed 5.7 kilograms immediately after the birth. This is more than the normal range,” said Darpana Trivedi, doctor.
The baby’s mother said her first child had weighed at 3.5 kilograms at the time of birth.
“I am very happy. This is my second child. My earlier child weighed 3.5 kilograms at birth and my second baby weighs 5.7 kilograms. With so much weight, the baby is still healthy. My baby is also being considered for creating a record of being the heaviest baby in India,” said Preeti Mehta, the newborn’s mother.
The world’s heaviest baby was born in Italy in 1955 and tipped the scales at 10.3 kilograms (22.8 pounds). By Sanjeev Amin (ANI)
