SRINAGAR - Restrictions were imposed in the old city areas of Srinagar Saturday, a day after a youth died during violent protests.

Tufail Ahmad Matoo, a Class 12 student, died in Rajouri Kadal area of the old city Friday during clashes between security forces and stone pelting youth.

“We have imposed preventive restrictions in five police station areas of Rainawari, Nowhatta, S.R. Gunj, Safa Kadal and Khanyar,” a police officer said.

Police here assert that 19-year-old Matoo was not killed by security forces. But residents of the area hold the security men responsible.

Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was, meanwhile, taken into custody by the police from his uptown Hyderpora residence to prevent him from leading any protests. He has been shifted to the nearby Humhama police station.
