Greenpeace activists demand justice for Tokyo Two

NEW DELHI - Greenpeace activists demanded justice for whales and their most vocal defenders, the Japanese activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki, popularly known as the Tokyo Two, on World Oceans Day in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Greenpeace activists held a symbolic demonstration holding banners and chanting slogans in support of the Tokyo Two, who are currently awaiting trial in Japan.
“Japan kills hundreds of whales every year in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and this is done under the false pretext of scientific whaling, and this entire whale hunt is sponsored by Japanese taxpayers’ money, which is worth millions of dollars,” said Areeda Hamid, an activist.
“Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki, who were also known as Tokyo Two actually acted in public interest and they exposed the corruption, an embezzlement that lies in the heart of this whaling industry. So activism is not a crime, they acted in public interest,” added Hamid.
Hamid further said whaling should be put in trial and not the Tokyo Two.he Japanese Police arrested 31-year-old Sato and 41-year old Suzuki in 2008 for exposing a whale meat scandal involving the government-sponsored whaling programme.
The duo face a possible jail term of up to ten years. (ANI)
