Keshub Mahindra Sentenced to Two Years Imprisonment in Bhopal Gas Tragedy Case

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com) — After 25 years of hearing, Keshub Mahindra, the accused of Bhopal gas tragedy got two years of imprisonment.
Keshub Mahindra is a renowned industrialist of India. He is the chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, India’s largest SUV maker.
During Bhopal gas leak, Mahindra was the chairman of union Carbide. He joined the company in 1947 and became chairman in 1963.
Keshub Mahindra, a graduate from Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, USA has also served as the chairman of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad from 1975 to 1985.
Mahindra was honored with several awards. The most recent being the ‘2008 Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Award for Lifetime Contribution to the Automotive Industry’.
Meanwhile, BJP has described the decision as ‘painful’. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters that only two years of imprisonment was not enough for the accused.
Besides, BJP urged the government for reconsidering the nuclear bill that allows Rs.500 crore compensation to be paid by the operator of the nuclear plant in case of nuclear accidents. The opposition parties are arguing that this amount is too meager to serve the purpose of the victims’ family and they need a hike in the compensation amount.
