AGARTALA - To stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action for environmental conservation an awareness rally started from the Umakanta Academy here this morning on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Messages highlighting the threat of global warming, human-induced climate change, the thinning of the ozone layer and the impact of chemical pollution and deforestation featured on the rally.

Academicians, doctors, politicians, students, non-government organisation (NGO) and sports personnels participated in the rally.

The Tripura State Pollution Control Board and Agartala Municipal Council organised the main rally.

Several programmes have been organised across the State to create awareness about environmental disasters and how to control them.

The environment activists had also urged the people in Tripura to reduce use of petrol and diesel in transport sector and curb the burning of Green House Gases (GHGs) which ultimately contributed to increase in the global temperature.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 in more than 100 countries. It is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates awareness world-wide about the environment. The theme for 2010 is “Biodiversity - Ecosystems Management and the Green Economy.”.

Combating climate change and preserving ecosystems services that underpin our economies is an issue for everyone. Every individual’s efforts, no matter how small, can contribute to the sustainable development of our economies and communities around the world.

On this day, individuals, non-governmental organizations, community and youth groups, business, industry and the media organize activities to renew their commitments to protect and develop the environment. By Pinaki Das (ANI)
