SILIGURI - A non-government organization in West Bengal’s Siliguri city organized a campaign on Monday on the occasion of ‘World Anti-Tobacco Day’ to make people aware of the evil effects of tobacco.
The Siliguri Sumita Cancer Relief Welfare and Educational Society took out a rally with students and the NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets holding placards and banners in support of their campaign.
M K Bhattacharya, the secretary of the Sumita Cancer Society said that by means of this rally, they are creating awareness among the people about the ill effects of tobacco consumption.
“Today is World Tobacco Day. Siliguri Sumita Cancer Relief Welfare and Educational Society along with Sumita Cancer Research Institute organised this rally against tobacco,” said Bhattacharya.
“We are creating awareness among the people that the consumption of tobacco can lead to cancer. Many people gave away their cigarettes and tobacco to us,” he added.
Bhattacharya further said that their aim is to have a ‘Tobacco free’ Siliguri state.
“Our aim is to have a tobacco-free Siliguri state. The coming generation would be benefited. Those who are addicted to tobacco will also get benefit and it will also help to reduce cancer,” said Bhattacharya.
On the occasion, the members of the NGO also performed street plays to highlight the issue. (ANI)
